Name: HMSM VANDAL

Length 62.5 meter, width: 4.9 meter, draught: 4, tonnage 740 ton

Cause: 24.2.1943 lost whilst exercising in inchmarnock water, firth of clyde. she was last seen departing lochranza bay on the morning of 24.2.1943. later a smoke candle was reported off lochranza bay. she was under the command of lt j s bridger and had a crew of 37. she was not found until 1994.

HER IDENTITY WAS CONFIRMED BY GUS BRITTON OF THE SUBMARINE MUSEUM AT GOSPORT AFTER EXAMINATION OF THE VIDEO IMAGES. (HMS HURWORTH WK SEARCH DTD 26.6.94 AND INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY THE `SUBMARINE OLD COMRADE'S ASSOCIATION', ARTICLE IN NAVY NEWS). INS AS NDW. BR STD. 30.1.03 [EUT] POSN: 5543.683N, 0520.017W. NE 2383. 2.10.03 NOT LOCATED IN LISTED POSN. INTACT WITH 35DEGS LIST TO PORT. NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF DAMAGE, BUT THE 1.2MTR TAIL CONE, KNOW AS THE 'DUCK'S TAIL' WAS MISSING. AFTER HATCH CLOSED BUT FWD EXCAPE HATCH WAS FOUND OPEN. IDENTIFIED BY LETTERING 'VANDAL' ON THE CONNING TOWER. (DIVER MAGAZINE, OCT 2003 EDN). HH100/351/21 28.11.03 DIVED 8.03 IN 5543.641N, 0519.604W [WGD] USING GPS. DEPTH BY DIVERS GAUGE 101MTRS. SEABED IS THICK MUD WHICH IS EASILY DISTURBED. LIES ON THE EDGE OF A STEEP SLOPE. IDENTIFIED BY NAME ON CONNING TOWER. TOWER APPEARS BROKEN AND HAS ALMOST CERTAINLY SLIPPED DOWN HEAVILY ON THE SEABED TO PORT. PRESSURE HULL REMAINS INTACT WITH LIST OF ABOUT 35DEGS TO PORT. DUCK'S TAIL IS MISSING. RUDDER IS MIDSHIPS AND UNDAMAGED. STBD PROP IS VISIBLE WITH WORN TIPS, PORT PROP BURIED. STBD SHAFT AND BRACKET INTACT WITH NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE. STBD AFT PLANE IS AT ZERO DEGS, PORT AFT NOT SEEN. ENGINE ROOM HATCH IS CLOSED. TOWER IS IN A POOR STATE WITH BOTH PERISCOPES IN PLACE AND RETRACTED. W/T MAST IN PLACE. BINNACLE AND COMPASS REPEAT IN PLACE. 12 PDR DECK GUN IN PLACE AND COVERED IN NETS. FWD TORPEDO LOADING HATCH CLOSED BUT FWD ESCAPE HATCH IS OPEN AND APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN OPENED FROM THE INSIDE. INTERNAL LADDER NOT IN PLACE. STBD FWD PLANE COVERED IN NETTING AND HAS BEEN EXTENDED INTO THE DIVE POSN. CINC REQUESTED FOR POSN.(L BISHOP, EMAIL DTD 28.11.03). CONFIRMS HMS HURWORTH'S PREVIOUSLY REPORTED POSN WAS ON [OGB]. RETAIN AS NDW IN REVISED POSN. BR STD. 28.11.03 MANILLA BERTHING ROPES COILED AROUND BOLLARDS. VESSEL WAS LAST SEEN ON SURFACE AT 1000 POSSIBLY UNDERTAKING LOG CALIBRATION. COULD HAVE SUFFERED LOG PROBLEMS AND FREE FLOOD AT RATE OF 2 TONS/MINUTE AFTER LOG RECOVERED.
