Shipwreck details

Name: HMSM UPSTART

Length 60 meter, width: 4.9 meter, draught: 4, tonnage 740 ton

Cause: built in 1942 by vickers armstrong, barrow-in-furness. two oil engines of 317bhp, twin shaft. passage ex-portmouth for scuttling. one 3 inch deck gun, 4 x 21 inch tt. sunk for use as a sonar target. deck gun and props removed prior to sinking.

H1284/75 19.6.75 WK OF SUBMARINE LOCATED. LIES E/W IN 115FT OF WATER AT THE CONNING TOWER. STANDS 23FT HIGH ON SEA BED. MAY BE THE SUBMARINE A.3, SUNK 17.5.1912. APPLICATION TO MOD(N)-CONTRACTS TO PURCHASE WRECK. (LETTER FROM SPITHEAD MARINE SALVAGE LTD OF SOUTHSEA DTD 10.6.75). H1287/75 27.8.75 MAY BE THE SUBMARINE HMS UPSTART, SUNK 29.7.1957, IN A POSITION GIVEN AS 'OFF THE ISLE OF WIGHT', FOR USE AS ASDIC TARGET. (N/CP55225/75 FROM DCN(S). H2555/74 12.1.79 IDENTIFIED AS SMALL SUBMARINE, WITH BOWS EAST. CONNING TOWER LISTING TO PORT 20DEGS, THIS BEING THE PART WHICH GIVES PECULIAR E/S EFFECT. HAS NO GUN AND TOWER IS OF VERY BASIC, ROUND DESIGN WITH HATCH OPEN AS IS LARGER HATCH ON REAR DECKING. PRESSURE HULL APPEARS SOUND AND IS MOSTLY BURIED IN SAND/SHINGLE. PROPELLERS ARE MISSING. DOES NOT CORRESPOND WITH PHOTOGRAPH OF A.3 BOTH IN SIZE OR SHAPE OF CONNING TOWER. (J JAMES). HH090/962/01 4.12.02 EXAM'D IN 5030.415N, 0132.794W [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR 29.6, FOUL 29.9MTRS.
