Cause: 10.3.17 mined with loss of 3 officers and 28 ratings. (ww1sl). mine thought to have been laid by uc 76 off balta sound on 10.3.17. e49 was sheltering from a gale in balta sound. on leaving the sound through south channel she struck the mine. (shipwrecks of n scotland, baird).
