Name: HMS WARWICK DEEPING

Length 47.5 meter, width: 7.9 meter, tonnage 550 ton

Cause: built in 1934 by cochrane shipbuilders, selby for the newington steam navigation co. purchased 9.1939 by the admiralty for use as anti-submarine vessel. 1 x 4.7 inch gun fwd and machine gun aft. was attacked by several e-boats of the 5th torpedo boat flotilla based at cherbourg. two torpedoes were fired at the vessel, one went beneath and the other failed to explode. stopped after ingress of water from previous damage and foundered. crew recovered. (diver magazine).

LYING 150/330DEGS. ABOUT 80MTRS LONG. (SCESU, HI 81/80). APPARENTLY RECENT WK, MAST APPEARS TO BE STANDING. INS AS WK 26MTRS. BR STD. 11.6.88 REPORTED DIVED ON SEVERAL TIMES IN POOR VISIBILITY. FOUND TO BE A WARSHIP. PROBABLY A WW2 FLOWER-CLASS CORVETTE OR AN ARMED TRAWLER. INTACT WITH 4" GUN STILL IN PLACE AND MANY DEPTH CHARGES [MK VII] IN RAILS ON QUARTERDECK. (LT CDR J O'DRISCOLL, 10.6.88). HH100/351/05 28.11.91 DIVED AND IDENTIFIED AS WK OF HMS WARWICK DEEPING - BINNACLE AND BELL RECOVERED. STANDS 24FT HIGH IN GEN DEPTH 120FT AND ORIENTATED 110/290DEGS, WITH BOW E. (M J WOODWARD, 16.11.91). 24.10.12 EXAM'D 29.1.12 IN 5034.255N, 0127.813W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 29.92 IN GEN DEPTH 35MTRS. LEAST W/C DEPTH 28.72MTRS. SCOUR 2.5MTRS AROUND WK. LENGTH 52MTRS, WIDTH 9.5MTRS, HT 5.2MTRS. LIES 127/307 DEGS. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. INTACT, UPRIGHT. (EMU, HI 1366). AMEND WK 28.5MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
