Shipwreck details

Name: HMS VERNON II (POSSIBLY)

Length 74.7 meter, width: 18.6 meter, tonnage 6300 ton

Cause: 29.11.24 ex-marlborough. built of wood in 1855 as sailing 1st rate by portmouth dockyard. while still on the stocks the stern was removed and launched, the vessel lengthened and engine and boilers installed. the stern was then reattached. screw propusion with auxillary sail. 1000hp. relegated to training ship 1878. renamed vernon ii in 1904 and used as a torpedo school. sold oct 1924 to shipbreakers but developed a heavy list to stbd, then later capsized and broke into two off brighton whilst under tow on 29.11.24. parts of the hull were later washed up on bognor sands. armament comprised 1 x 110pdr, 16 x 8 inch, 10 x 40pdr, 88 x 32pdr.

SCOURING APPARENT TO W OF WK. POSSIBLY 'HMS VERNON' LISTED 5.5C NNW. WK PARTIALLY BROKEN UP BUT MAIN SUPERSTRUCTURE STILL INTACT. (HMS FOX, HI 52/76). CHART AS WK 37MTRS. NC 2450. H2318/74 9.5.78 LOCATED 20.2.79 & EXAMINED 23.3.79, DURING HYDROSEARCH TRIALS, IN 503358N, 003804W [OGB] USING DECCA. LEAST E/S DEPTH 39.8 IN GEN DEPTHS 46-48MTRS. SONAR HT 8.8MTRS, LENGTH 80MTRS, BEAM 13MTRS. LYING 087/267DEGS. (HMS BULLDOG, 29.4.79). PRESUMABLY THIS SAME WK. NCA. HH091/002/01 29.10.02 EXAM'D 14.7.02 IN 5034.080N, 0037.874W [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR 37.9, FOUL 38.3MTRS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 38 IN GEN DEPTH 44MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH 60MTRS, WIDTH 10MTRS. DCS3 HT 5.5MTRS. LIES 080/260 DEGS. NO MAGNETIC ANOMALY. WELL DEFINED AND PROBABLY INTACT. (NP 1016, HI 1002). AMEND TO SW 37MTRS. BR STD. SEP 2018/000198963 10.08.18 EXAM'D 12.01.18; IN 5034.072N, 0037.870W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 37.98MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 47MTRS, LENGTH 49MTRS, WIDTH 13.4MTRS, HEIGHT 9MTRS, ORIENTATION 084/264 DEGS. WRECK SITS UPRIGHT ON A FLAT SEABED. ONLY THE WEST HALF APPEARS PRESENT AND INTACT. EAST HALF HAS COLLAPSED. (MMT, HI 1498). AMEND NDW 37MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
