Cause: Ex-george corten, ex-zencon, ex-zircon '35. built in 1918 by cox & co engineering co ltd, falmouth as hms george corten. decommissioned in 1921 and renamed 'zircon'. hired again in 8.1939 as minesweeper as hms northcoates. one boiler, triple expansion engine of 87hp, single shaft. sank through stress of weather while under tow following engine failure.

- NM BLOCK 980/76. H1284/76/167 13.5.76 WK APPROX 80FT LONG. GIVES AN APPEARANCE OF BEING A SMALL COASTER, BUT IN THE CENTRE OF THE CARGO AREA THERE IS A LARGE NAVAL GUN MOUNTED. A SHELL CASING REMOVED FROM THIS GUN WAS STAMPED WITH THE DATE 1942. THE BRIDGE OF THE VESSEL SEEMS TO BE IN THE SHAPE OF A LARGE SQUARE STEEL BOX & ON THE SEABED AT THE BOWS OF THE VESSEL THERE IS A TORPEDO. THE CARGO APPEARS TO BE LENGTHS OF RUBBER TUBING 20FT LONG BY 3INS DIAMETER. (R G CLARK, KELVIN HUGHES, 10.5.76). H1287/76/255 27.7.76 REPORTED AS BEING A SMALL MINESWEEPER WITH 12 PDR GUN MOUNTED ON FOREDECK. 12 PDR SHELLS FOUND IN BOX NEAR GUN WERE STAMPED 'ENFIELD CARTRIDGE CO.' & DTD 1942. (MRS E C TEMPLE, 15.7.76). H2979/74 30.11.76 WK IS UPRIGHT LYING N/S APPROX & THE HIGHEST PART IS THE FORWARD BRIDGE. THE WK APPEARS TO BE A NAVAL VESSEL BECAUSE IT HAS A 3IN GUN ON THE FORWARD DECK WITH 2 MACHINE GUNS. THERE IS A DERRICK MOUNTED OVER THE BOW TOGETHER WITH A QUANTITY OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE SWEEP WIRE. (E GILES, 13.11.76). 11.6.76 REPORTED BY MR DILLINGHAM, SUBSERV, 11.6.76 TO BE ARMED TRAWLER, GUN STILL IN POSITION FORWARD. ABOUT 150FT IN LENGTH. LYING SE/NW, BOWS SE, & ABOUT 18FT HIGH. ADDITIONAL INFO FROM MR DON TEMPLE, FV 'ARAMINTA', 12 PDR GUN ON FORECASTLE HAS 1939 ON BREECH & 1942 ON SOME EMPTY SHELL CASES. THERE ARE ALSO TWIN 0.5INS MACHINE GUNS ON PORT SIDE ABAFT THE BRIDGE. (D TEMPLE, 11.9.76). H1310/83/39 12.10.83 IDENTIFIED AS THE ARMED TRAWLER 'NORTHCOATES'. (T FRANCIS, 8.10.83). WK SITS UPRIGHT IN 33MTRS. SHIP'S ENGINE ROOM EASILY ACCESSIBLE THROUGH ROTTING DECK AND REMAINS OF SUPERSTRUCTURE. FOREDECK RISES A FEW MTRS ABOVE SAND SEABED, WITH A SINGLE DECK-GUN. (DIVER MAGAZINE AUG '98). LEAST M/B DEPTH 19.93MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 26MTRS, LENGTH 42MTRS, WIDTH 8.5MTRS, HEIGHT 6.6MTRS, ORIENTATION 122/302 DEGS. SCOUR 2.2MTRS DEEP. DEGRADED AND LIES WITH A SLIGHT LIST TO PORT. BOW TOWARDS 122 DEGS. A GUN STANDS PROMINENTLY NEAR THE BOW &THE A-FRAME ON WHICH THE ELECTRO-MAGNETIC COIL WAS MOUNTED IS VISIBLE LEANING ON THE SEABED BENEATH. ALSO IDENTIFIABLE IS THE SINGLE BOILER &THE RUDDER AT THE STERN. TWO SHALLOW SCOURS HAVE FORMED AT THE BOW &STERN. (MMT, HI 1498). AMEND DW 19.9MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
