Name: HMS MONTAGUE

Length 123.4 meter, width: 22.9 meter, draught: 8.2, tonnage 14000 ton

Cause: duncan class battleship. built 1901. ran aground at shutter point, lundy island, in dense fog. the commanding officer & navigating officer were both found guilty in subsequent court-martial of losing the ship by negligence. attempts to refloat were unsuccessful & the vessel was largely broken up in situ by the liverpool salvage company. all crew safe. Details measurements/cartography: 18.4.68 HULL IS REPD PARTLY INTACT. THERE IS EVIDENCE OF SALVAGE WORK HAVING BEEN CARRIED OUT MANY YEARS AGO. THE TOP SUPERSTRUCTURE DRIES AT LW & THE ARMOUR PLATING LOOKS AS THOUGH IT HAS BEEN REMOVED. (MR SHIERS, BSAC). DURING ENQUIRIES MADE INTO THE POSSIBLE PURCHASE OF THIS WRECK IN JAN '68, DNC INDICATED THAT OWNERSHIP COULD NOT BE TRACED AS VARIOUS SALVAGE OPERATIONS HAD BEEN CARRIED OUT OVER THE YEARS. 2.5.68 APPLICATION TO PURCHASE WK MADE BY T J HIRON. (D OF C (N), N/CP.52630/68). 18.7.68 RIGHTFUL OWNERSHIP OF THIS VESSEL CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED. NO PURCHASE APPLICATION CAN BE CONSIDERED UNTIL THE DETAILS OF PREVIOUS SALVAGE OPS CAN BE CLARIFIED.
