Cause: built in 1912 by the london & glasgow shipbuilding co, glasgow. 3-drum boilers, turbine engines of 25000 shp for 32 knots. struck a mine which had been laid by the german raider meteor. broke in two and sank. 70 men lost.

HH100/351/15 23.8.00 DIVED IN 5809.90N, 0230.65W [WGD] USING DGPS. DEPTH TO WK 53MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 57MTRS BY DEPTH GAUGE. LENGTH 50MTRS, WIDTH 12MTRS, HT 4MTRS. NO SCOUR. SEABED FINE SAND AND MUD. WRECKAGE IS WELL BROKEN UP, BUT DESPITE 7 DIVERS ON THE WK THE BOW, STERN, ENGINE OR BOILERS WERE NOT LOCATED. THE MOST DOMINATING FEATURE ARE FOUR INVERTED 'V' SHAPES EACH WITH A CYLINDER AT THE APEX OF THE V. THE SIDES OF THESE STRUCTURES APPEAR TO BE MADE OF PIPES AND THE CYLINDER AT THE APEX HAS A HOLE IN IT ON THE TOP AND THERE APPEARS TO BE A SECOND, CONCENTRIC, CYLINDER INSIDE. THE FOUR STRUCTURES ARE ALL IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A GAP OF ABOUT 6 FEET BETWEEN EACH. EACH STRUCTURE IS ABOUT 12 FEET WIDE WITH THE CYLINDERS ABOUT 6 FEET IN DIAMETER. THE WRECKAGE WAS STREWN WITH BRASS VALVES WITH BRASS HANDWHEELS OF VARIOUS SIZES. THERE WERE LARGE BORE PIPES ON THE WRECKAGE EMBOSSED WITH; 'W H ALLENSON & CO, BEDFORD, ENGLAND, 1912' AND THE WORD: 'CONQUEROB'. THIS IS POSSIBLY ONLY A PART OF A WK, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF THE COAL CARGO. FURTHER WK, OR PART OF THIS ONE, LOCATED BY E/S IN 5810.25N, 0229.79W [WGD] (QV). (J LEIGH/B HUMBY, LTR DTD 15.8.00).
