Shipwreck details

Name: HMS HARSTAD

Length 36.6 meter, width: 7.3 meter, draught: 4.3, tonnage 258 ton

Cause: built in 1932 by smith's dock co, middlesborough as 'kos xvii'. crewed by the royal norwerian navy. triple expansion engines for 12 knots. requisitioned as a minesweeper in 1940. bow mounted 37mm and 20mm guns. torpedoed by e-boats of the 5th flotilla whilst escorting convoy wp 300. also lost were the mv modavia, hms lord hailsham and lct 381. (n r chipchase).

HEIGHT ABOVE SEABED 16FT. (HMS SEAGULL, 1950). CHART AS WK 25FMS. NC 3315. H3950/70 21.5.71 AMENDED TO WK 46MTRS. NC 3315. H5982/82 12.1.83 WK SHOWN IN 502410N, 031116W [OGB] ON KINGFISHER CHARTS K(SW)1 & 2, [1982]. NCA. H2791/86 23.5.86 LOCATED 9.3.86 BY E/S IN 502418N, 030124W [OGB] USING DECCA. COULD NOT BE FOUND BY DIVERS. (DSV BRITISH PROVIDENCE, HN). NCA. HH100/351/13 9.10.97 DIVED IN 502420N, 030128W USING DECCA. AN UNKNOWN STEAMSHIP OF WW2 VINTAGE. INTACT STERN SECTION WITH SINGLE PROP. THIS PART IS UPRIGHT AND TERMINATES IN A SINGLE BOILER BEYOND WHICH THE BOW SECTION IS DETACHED AND COLLAPSED. SHELLS OF APPROX 20MM CALIBRE WERE SEEN. A WALKER CHERUB III SHIP'S LOG WAS RECOVERED. THE SERIAL NUMBER INDICATED THAT THIS HAD BEEN ASSEMBLED FOR THE ADMIRALTY ON 12.12.1942. (N R CHIPCHASE, 8.10.97). NCA. HH100/351/13 10.9.98 IDENTIFIED BY MINESWEEPING GEAR AND UNIQUE HULL FEATURES. STERN SECTION UPRIGHT AND INTACT BUT BROKEN OFF AT BOILER. BOW SECTION LIES 10MTRS TO THE NE ON STB'D SIDE. ACOUSTIC HAMMER 'A' FRAME ON BOWS. ACOUSTIC HAMMER ON SEABED. 37MM GUN BANDSTAND ON SEABED BELOW FWD DECKHOUSE. (N R CHIPCHASE). NCA. HH090/961/01 4.12.03 EXAM'D 23.4.03 IN 5024.212N, 0301.342W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 46.0 IN GEN DEPTH 51MTRS. NO SCOUR. IN TWO PARTS. STERN PART: LENGTH 22MTRS, WIDTH 12MTRS. DCS3 HT 5.0MTRS. LIES 162/342 DEGS. BOW PART: LENGTH 13MTRS, WIDTH 11MTRS. DCS3 HT 6.2MTRS. NO CLEAR ORIENTATION. POOR MAGNETIC ANOMALY. (GARDLINE, HI 961). AMEND WK 46MTRS. BR STD.
