Shipwreck details

Name: HMS HAMPSHIRE

Length 137.2 meter, width: 20.7 meter, draught: 7.6, tonnage 10850 ton

Cause: built in 1905 by armstrong whitworth. yarrow boilers, triple expansion engines of 21000 ihp for 22.4 knots. four 7.5 inch, six 6 inch, two 12 pdr and twenty 3 pdr guns. two torpedo tubes. on wartime passage from scapa flow for russia with lord kitchener and this staff. in a strong ne gale the two escorting destroyers were unable to keep up and after about an hour they were ordered to return to port, hampshire reduced speed and carried on. struck a mine laid by u-75 and sank within 15 minutes. three rafts containing 50-70 men managed to get away but the ne gale and the cold caused nearly all to perish in a short time. on the following morning one warrant officer and 11 men reached the shore in safety. others who landed therabouts died soon afterwards from exposure. the official complement was 655 to which must be added lord kitchener, two staff officers and two civilians.
