Cause: 8.12.1917 built in 1905 by caledon for general steam navigation co. hired as armed boarding steamer. torpedoed on 8.12.1917 off lerwick by german submarine uc40. vessel sank while under tow in nw gale from lerwick on 24.12.1917. no lives lost. (k heath)

LENGTH 98MTRS (POSSIBLY UP TO 134MTRS), WIDTH 32MTRS, HT 6.4MTRS. LIES 037/217DEGS WITH BOWS SW. VERY BROKEN UP WITH JUST A SHADOW ON THE SEABED INDICATING THE BOWS AND STERN. CENTRE PART APPEARS TO CONSIST OF 3 BOILERS. (NETSURVEY, HI 1218). PROBABLY TWO BOILERS AND THE ENGINE. INS AS WK 49MTRS.
- NM 3445/08. 23.9.08 RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS WRECK IS MOST PROBABLY HMS GRIVE, FROM SINKING POSN GIVEN IN LOG OF ESCORTING HM TRAWLER LUMBLEY CASTLE. CINC REQUESTED. (K HEATH E-MAIL DTD 12.9.08) NCA. 4.8.10 DIVED AND CONFIRMED TO BE HMS GRIVE. REMOVE CINC. (K HEATH, TELECON 4.8.10) CINC REMOVED. NCA. 18.8.10 WK DIVED AGAIN ON 17.8.10 AND BELL ENGRAVED "GRIVE" RECOVERED. (K HEATH, TELECON 18.8.10) NCA.
