Name: HMS FOYLE

Length 68.6 meter, width: 10.1 meter, tonnage 550 ton

Cause: built 1903 by cammell laird. struck a mine when proceeding through dover strait. broke in two and forward section sank. stern section remained afloat, was taken in tow but sank in 501638n, 041046w approx. (dods).

MANY PIECES OF WRECKAGE LIE NEARBY ON SEABED. (D T B CALKIN, 18.8.70). PROBABLY STERN SECTION OF DESTROYER HMS FOYLE - MR CALKIN HAS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED A SMALL GUN ON THIS WK. CHART AS WK 20FMS (36MTRS). BR STD. H4267/70 8.9.72 CONFIRMED AS HMS FOYLE - NAMEPLATE RECOVERED BY DIVERS IN 511638N, 041046W [OGB]. NCA. H4979/72 2.1.73 EXAM'D IN 501642N, 041048W USING HSA. LEAST E/S DEPTH 40 IN GEN DEPTH 46MTRS. SLIGHT SCOUR. CONFIRMED AS WK OF HMS FOYLE BY LOCAL DIVER, WHO STATED THAT LITTLE, OTHER THAN THE BOILERS, REMAIN PROUD OF SEABED. NO SONAR RESPONSE OBTAINED. LEAST DEPTH CONSIDERED TO HAVE BEEN FOUND. (HMS WOODLARK, 1972). BR STD. H4514/76 5.4.77 LOCATED BY MAGNETOMETER IN 501654N, 041044W [OGB] USING DECCA. DIVERS REPORT THAT ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE VESSEL IS MISSING. (T ALLEN, 27.3.77). NCA. HH100/351/07 15.7.93 DIVED 15.4.93 IN 501638.5N, 041043W [OGB] USING DECCA. LEAST DEPTH BY DIVER AT MID-TIDE 47 IN GEN DEPTH 50MTRS. NO SCOUR. LIES STERN TO NW WITH PORT SIDE BURIED COMPLETELY IN MUD SEABED. HIGHEST POINT IS BOILERS STANDING 2-3MTRS HIGH. LEAST E/S DEPTH 42.5 IN GEN DEPTH 46MTRS. NO SCOUR. DCS3 HT 3.8MTRS. LENGTH 60MTRS, WIDTH 15MTRS. LIES 150/330DEGS. HEAVILY BROKEN UP. (HMSML GLEANER, HI 594). CHART AS WK 42MTRS IN 501642N, 041046.5W [OGB]. NC 1900. HH100/351/13 8.7.98 DIVED IN 501647N, 011053.5W [OGB] USING GPS. SUNK WELL INTO THE SEABED. ONLY THE ENGINE AND BOILERS STAND PROUD. GUN STILL VISIBLE ON STERN AND THE TOPS OF THE SIDE PLATING FORM A GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE SHIP IN SOME AREAS. DECKS GENERALLY BURIED OR MISSING IN A MUDDY BOTTOM. MAST STILL LYING TO STBD FWD OF THE ENGINE AND SURROUNDED BY GENERAL DEBRIS. SOME SIDE PLATING VISIBLE FWD OF THE ENGINE ROOM HAS COLLAPSED INWARDS. (T WOODCOCK, 1.7.98). NCA.
