(ST ATHAN SUB AQUA CLUB, 19.6.70). NCA. H2568/71 14.11.73 STRUCK CREBINICKS. WK FOUND BY DIVERS IN 1969. BELL RECOVERED. LIES IN 120FT. ONLY ANCHORS AND CANNON VISIBLE. AREA FULLY EXAMINED BUT NOTHING FOUND USING E/S. (HMS HECATE, ROS DTD 16.7.73). H2529 20.3.75 INS RESTRICTED AREA, RADIUS 200MTRS, CENTRED ON 495212N, 062629W [OGB], WITH LEGEND. BR STD. H1280/76 29.1.76 ALL TRACE OF WOOD HAS LONG SINCE GONE. ALL THAT REMAINS ON THE SITE ARE NUMEROUS IRON CANNON, ANCHORS, CANNON BALLS AND SMALLER ARTEFACTS AMONG THE ROCKS. THE MAJORITY OF THE LATTER LIE IN A GULLY ON THE E SIDE OF TEARING LEDGE AND RUNNING N/S, DEPTH BEING 120FT IN N, 70FT IN S. A FEW ARTIFACTS LIE ON S SIDE OF THE LEDGE IN 90 TO 120FT. THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE THE SITE OF WK OF HMS EAGLE, SUNK 1707. 62 CANNON HAVE NOW BEEN FOUND ON SITE. EAGLE WAS A 70 GUNS SHIP, ROMNEY ONLY HAD 48 GUNS. EAGLE'S CAPTAIN WAS ROBERT HANCOCK. (RAF HONNINGTON, SAC EXPEDITION REPORT 1, 15.8.75). H1325/79 16.3.81 EVIDENCE THAT THIS IS WRECK OF THE EAGLE AND NOT THE ROMNEY IS OVERWHELMING.
