Shipwreck details

Name: HMS BREDA

Length 86.9 meter, width: 10.7 meter, draught: 4.3, tonnage 1431 ton

Cause: steel vessel, ex- sapphire, built in 1912 by john brown of clydebank as a steam yacht for the duke of bedford, with 3 cylinder triple expansion engine, single shaft & 2 boilers. she was taken over by the admiralty during ww1 as an auxillary patrol vessel at gibraltar. having been returned to her owner at end of ww1 she was purchased in 1939 as a convoy leader and converted to submarine tender in 1940. damaged in collision with a submarine. had to be beached. fwd section of wk is broken, after section is intact. (b baird, argyll shipwrecks & sibi).

H1935/79 3.3.81 EXAM'D 13.9.80 IN 552456N, 053458W [OGB] USING TRISPONDER. LEAST E/S DEPTH 1.3MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 7-9MTRS. LYING INTACT ON HEADING 010/190 DEGS. NOT SWEPT DUE TO PROXIMITY TO SHORELINE. LENGTH 78MTRS, BEAM 20MTRS [TAKEN OFF FAIR SHEET]. (HMS HERALD, HI 6A/80). BR STD. 27.9.03 EUT POSN: 5524.932N, 0535.030W. NE 1864. 20.1.04 WK LIES 200MTRS OFFSHORE, DIRECTLY OUT FROM KILKERRAN BURN. WK HAS BEEN DISPERSED. THERE IS ALSO A SMALL WK ON THE SHORE ABOUT 200MTRS TO SE. (DIVE WEST SCOTLAND, PUBLISHED 1984). POSN GIVEN AS 5524.967N, 0534.983W [UND] BY GPS, APPROX 400MTRS OFFSHORE. BOW IN 9MTRS, LIES DOWN A MUD SLOPE WITH STERN IN 14MTRS. FORWARD OF MIDSHIPS IS TANGLED MASS OF METAL, STERN IS ALMOST INTACT. PHOTO OF STRANDED VESSEL & LOCATION DIAGRAM.
