Cause: 17.6.41 built in 1939 by bremer vulkan schiff-und maschinenbau, vegesack for norddeutscher lloyd. 7 cylinder oil engine of 5200 bhp for 15 knots, single shaft. 1 x 4 inch, 1 x 6 pdr, 4 x qf 2 pdr aa guns & 4 x 20mm aa cannon. 6-8 aircraft. when war was declared sought refuge in curacao. attempted to return to germany in 3.1940 but was captured and towed to jamaica. renamed sinbad and then emipre audacity (cunard white star line). rebuilt 1941 as an escort carrier and commissioned 17.6.41 as the first escort carrier. torpedoed by u 751 on 21.12.41. the first torpedo struck the engine room, the next two caused an explosion in the aviation fuel, blowing off the bow.
