Shipwreck details

Name: HMS AUDACIOUS

Length 181.7 meter, width: 27.1 meter, draught: 8.2, tonnage 23000 ton

Cause: 27.10.14 built in 1913 by cammel, laird & co, birkenhead. a dreadnought battleship with 10 x 13.5inch, 16 x 4inch, 4 x 3pdr guns and 3 x tt. s turbines of 31000shp. ?quadruple shaft. struck a mine at about 0850hrs on 27.10.14 which caused an explosion well below the water line at the port side aft. port wing engine room flooded and heeled to port but with the starboard engine she shaped course for lough swilly. when about 15 miles had been covered she eased steaming. at about 1800hrs it was decided to abandon ship for the night. at about 2100hrs she capsized and sank with a great explosion which caused the only casualty incurred in the loss, a petty officer being killed in hms liverpool by a large armour plate hurled 800yards on to her deck. PERSISTENT SONAR RETURNS OF MEDIUM STRENGTH WERE FOUND TO BE EMANATING ON MOST BEARINGS BUT A VERY CLOSE SEARCH OF THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY FAILED TO PRODUCE ANYTHING ON THE E/S. IT BEING CONSIDERED THAT ALTHOUGH NOTHING WAS POSITIVELY FOUND THERE IS CERTAINLY SOMETHING THERE. POSITION 553354N, 081230W. (HMS DALRYMPLE, 1965). NCA. H3740/69 16.10.74 H3740/69 16.10.74 POSN 553354N, 081230W REPORTED. (RISDON BEAZLEY). FOR FILING ONLY. 9.11.76 N/CP56200/76 9.11.76 THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (NAVY) WOULD NOT WISH TO OFFER THIS WRECK FOR SALE DUE TO THE POSSIBLE PRESENCE OF EXPLOSIVES ON BOARD WHICH ARE IN A DANGEROUS CONDITION. HH100/351/21 28.11.03 HH100/351/21 28.11.03 DIVED IN LISTED POSN. DEPTH TO WK 48MTRS BY DEPTH GAUGE, GEN DEPTH 64MTRS. SEABED WHITE SAND WITH SCATTERING OF GRAVEL. LIES WITH BOWS SE. IDENTITY CONFIRMED BY OBVIOUS GUNS AND ARMOURED STRUCTURE. LIES COMPLETELY INVERTED WITH DISTINCTIVE RUDDER CONSTRUCTON BROKEN OFF AND LYING ON THE SEABED. THE 13.5 INCH TURRETS HAVE FALLEN FREE AND ALSO LIE INVERTED ALONGSIDE THE WK. BOW TIP HAS BROKEN OFF AND LIES ON STBD SIDE WITH ANCHORS FACING UP TOWARDS THE SURFACE. MANY COMPLETE 13.5 INCH SHELLS LIE AMONG THE WK AND SCATTERED ON THE SEABED. THEY APPEAR STABLE. (L BISHOP, EMAIL DTD 28.11.03). INS AS WK 46MTRS. HH100/351/21 1.12.03 HH100/351/21 1.12.03 DIVED 7.6.03 IN 5533.904N, 0812.573W [WGD]. WK LIES INVERTED. STERN LARGELY INTACT, BOWS BADLY BROKEN. 13 INCH TURRETS LYING ON THE SEABED. 4 PROPS STILL IN PLACE. NUMEROUS SHELLS AND CORDITE LYING AROUND. NO SCOUR. SEABED SAND, SHINGLE & GRAVEL. (C R POOLE). GENERALLY INTACT WITH HIGH AREA MIDSHIPS AND HIGH POINT AT NW END. SCOUR AROUND SE END. PREVIOUSLY REPORTED POSN CONFIRMED INCORRECT AFTER INSPECTION OF WHOLE M/B DATA SET. AMEND WK 75MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
