Cause: built 1696 baggshot, portsmouth dockyard. 90 guns, second rate. flagship of 21 english men o'war. passage gibraltar for portsmouth. ran into the western rocks in bad weather. no survivors. hms eagle, hms romner & hms firebrand were also lost. hms association's complement of some 800 men were lost, the total death toll being some 2000men. it was largely as a result of this loss that the admiralty board instituted a competition for a more accurate way to determine longitude.

Details measurements/cartography: A LARGE SELECTION OF GUNS, CANNON, SHOT PLATE ETC HAVE BEEN RECOVERED FROM THE AREA NEAR THE GILSTONE LEDGES. VARIOUS REPORTS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN THE DAILY NEWSPAPERS GIVING DETAILS OF HOW THE DIVERS LOCATED THIS WRECK. (CUTTINGS FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH 1968 TO 1969). 20.10.69 THE WRECK IS BELIEVED TO BE IN TWO DISTINCT SITES. THE SITE KNOWN AS CANNON GULLEY WAS DIVED ON BY THE RAF DIVERS AND THEY WERE INSTRUCTED NOT TO RECOVER ANY ARTEFACTS. THE SITE CONSISTED OF HUGE BOULDERS. THE GULLEYS BETWEEN THEM CONTAINING NUMEROUS IRON CANNON BALLS AND GRAPE SHOT. THERE IS STILL MUCH OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTEREST ON THE SITE. MOST DIVED ON AREA CONSISTS OF LARGE BOULDERS AND GULLEYS AND ONLYVISIBLE SIGNS OF WRECK ARE SOME CANNON AND ANCHORS ON SEABED. LIES WEST OF GILSTONE LEDGES IN THE SEMI-CIRCLE FORMED BY THEM. H1280/76/24 29.1.76 ALL WOOD HAS LONG GONE AND ALL THAT REMAINS ARE IRON CANNON, CANNON BALLS AND SMALLER ARTEFACTS SCATTERED IN ROCKY GULLEYS ON THE SIDE. NO HAZARD TO NAVIGATION.
