Shipwreck details

Name: HMS ARBUTUS

Length 79.9 meter, width: 10.7 meter, draught: 4.3, tonnage 1290 ton

Cause: built in 1917 by armstrong whitworth, barrow-in-furness. an 'arethusa' class armed sloop. twin triple expansion engines of 2500 ihp for 17 knots, twin shaft. on convoy escort work. two x 4 inch, two x 12 pound guns. torpedoed in very rough weather by ub-65. 9 men lost.

A SMALL, STRONG CONTACT LOCATED ON TWO SEPARATE DAYS FROM SW & TRACKED FROM 1500YDS BUT NO ON-TOP POSN OBTAINED. SEVERAL STEEP PINNACLES, BUT THEY DO NOT ACCOUNT FOR EXCELLENT SONAR RESPONSE OR ECHOES, WHICH WERE CAUSED BY EITHER A COMPACT SHOAL OF FISH WHICH REMAINED FOR TWO DAYS, OR A WK. POSSIBLY HMS ARBUTUS CHARTED 1.5M S. (HMS WOODLARK, HI 43/71).

- NM 1959/71. H4819/71 8.11.72 EXAM'D IN 513821N, 051942W USING HSA. LEAST E/S DEPTH 52 IN GEN DEPTH 55-57MTRS. NO SCOUR. NOT EASY TO LOCATE OR IDENTIFY. LIES IN AN AREA OF UNEVEN (?ROCKY) SEABED AND PRODUCED NO CLEAR TRANSIT SONAR TRACE. AREA 2M RADIUS ROUND 513700N, 051945W SEARCHED IN 2 DIRECTIONS 1000YDS APART & NOTHING ELSE FOUND. IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE HMS ARBUTUS. (HMS WOODLARK).

- NM 2169/72. H3804/72 3.10.77 EXAM'D 25.10.76 IN 513825.93N, 051946.95W [OGB] USING HIFIX [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 52.6 IN GEN DEPTH 57MTRS. NO SCOUR BUT ROCKY LEDGES IN AREA. WK SCATTERED IN BUTTERFLY-SHAPED PATTERN ORIENTATED N/S. LENGTH 110MTRS, WIDTH 50MTRS. (HMS WOODLARK, ROS DTD 17.12.76). H4919/77 23.1.78 CONFIRMED AS BEING VERY SCATTERED. (E GILES). 5.12.11 LOCATED 4.6.10 IN 5138.485N, 0519.859W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 51.00 IN GEN DEPTH 56.4MTRS. SCOUR 0.3MTR DEEP AT WK. LENGTH 104.6MTRS, WIDTH 31.0MTRS, HT 5.7MTRS. LIES 160/340 DEGS WITH BOWS SE. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. (FUGRO OSAE, HI 1328). COLLAPSED. AMEND WK 51MTRS IN REVISED POSN. BR STD.
