Shipwreck details

Name: HMS ACHERON (BOW SECTION)

Length 98.5 meter, width: 10.1 meter, draught: 3.7, tonnage 1350 ton

Cause: built in 1930 by thornycroft & co. three boilers, turbine engines for 34,000hp, twin shaft. passage from portsmouth for trials and return. 4 x 4.7 inch, 2 x 2pdr guns. 8 tt. mined and broke in two. bow section sank at once. 151 crew and dockyard trials team lost. mined and sank off the isle of wight. 151 lives lost.

(WW2SL). 22.5.84 REPD TO HAVE BEEN LOCATED BY M WOODWARD 5M S OF ISLE OF WIGHT IN 150FT OF WATER. (THE TIMES, 11.4.84). POSN 503200N, 012600W PD FOR FILING ONLY. 19.12.91 WK IS ALMOST UNDETECTABLE BY E/S AS IT IS VIRTUALLY BURIED WITHIN A SANDWAVE. IT LIES IN TWO PARTS WITH THE BOW SOME WAY FROM THE MAIN WRECKAGE. LIES 080/260 DEGS. MODERATE MAGNETIC ANOMALY. DEBRIS EXTENDS 17MTRS ALONG 165/345 DEGS. REPORTED BY M WOODWARD TO BE THE BOW SECTION OF HMS ACHERON, LYING ALMOST VERTICALLY, WITH SURROUNDING DEBRIS. (GARDLINE, HI 962). AMENDED CINC. INS AS SW 33MTRS. BR STD. 15.3.17 STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS, DEFENCE NO 147/2017. COMING INTO FORCE 3.3.17. AMEND "HISTORIC".
