Cause: built in 1924 by smith's dock co ltd, middlesbrough. owned at time of loss by hartley ss co. two boilers, triple expansion engine of 229nhp for 10 knots, single shaft. passage barry for ghent. sank during a severe sw gale. of 20 crew, 18 were lost.

BR STD. H3950/70 6.10.70 NOW CHARTED AS WK 32MTRS [LAT] [17FMS]. NC 2615. HH100/351/07 11.6.93 LOCATED AND DIVED ON IN 502332N, 014821W [OGB]. APPEARS TO BE FAR TOO SMALL TO BE THE 'HARTLEY'. LENGTH ONLY ABOUT 170FT AND ABOUT 1000 GRT MAXIMUM. HAD RIVETTED HULL AND ONLY BOILER REMAINS INTACT. NO EVIDENCE OF COAL FOUND. (D FAIRCLOUGH, 4.4.93). NCA. HH090/962/01 10.12.02 EXAM'D 5.7.02 IN 5023.926N, 0148.620W [WGD] USING DGPS. SWEPT CLEAR 32.0, FOUL 32.4MTRS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 32.3 IN GEN DEPTH 36MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH 40MTRS, WIDTH 17MTRS.
