Cause: built in 1880 by w doxford & sons of sunderland. registered in london. passage liverpool for cardiff. 2 boilers, compound engine, single screw. 300 ihp. crew of 22. on passage to load coal at cardiff, then to genoa and china and japan. spare length of propeller shaft became loose in terrible weather and broached the bottom plating below the water line. only the chief officer, j swanson, would leave the ship in a boat with 4 other men. the boat capsized and only swanson survived.
