Cause: built in 1969 by cantieri navali breda, venice. owned at time of loss by verrazano shipping corporation. passage port arthur, texas for le havre. cargo 32000 tons feed stock carbon black oil. collided in fog with norwegian m tanker team castor and sank stern first. crew recovered. some 1000 tons of fuel were lost resulting in a large slick. cargo of carbon black oil, which has a relative density of 1.09, was sighted by submersible as being contained within the intact vessel due to the low temperatures at depth.
