Cause: built in 1972. owned at time of loss by british united trawlers (hull) ltd. disappeared in the arctic ocean off the norwegian coast along with her crew of 36. an intense air and sea search for the vessel was conducted without success and she was subsequently posted as a missing vessel. three months after her loss a lifebuoy marked 'gaul, hull' was picked up by a norwegian fv and numerous other items were also discovered throughout may in an area ne of north cape. (msd). lost through downflooding through open weathertight doors and hatches after being 'knocked-down' by several very large breaking waves. (maib report 4/99).

H1271/76 5.1.76 OBSTN IN 720400N, 250500E USING DECCA. LENGTH 50-100MTRS, HT 20MTRS HIGH. LOCATED BY NORWEGIAN TRAWLER 'RAIRO' USING E/S WHEN RECOVERING SECTION OF 'GRANTON' TYPE TRAWL NET. NET THOUGHT TO HAVE COME FROM 'GAUL', BUT LATER CONFIRMED BY EXPERTS AS NOT THE CORRECT TYPE. (DEPT OF TRADE, MARINE SURVEY OFFICE, HULL, REPORT DTD 16.12.75). NCA. 11.2.96 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ALLEGING CONSPIRACY ON PARTS OF BRITISH AND RUSSIAN GOVERNMENTS OVER LOSS AND SUBSEQUENT DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE GAUL. (GUARDIAN ARTICLE DTD 26.10.1994). NCA. 25.8.98 WK HAS BEEN LOCATED (NO POSN GIVEN). STERN RAMP HATCHES AND AN INTERNAL DOOR WERE OPEN, LEADING TO SPECULATION THAT VESSEL FILLED WITH WATER AND SANK RAPIDLY IN THE TERRIBLE WEATHER AT THE TIME OF LOSS.
