Cause: built in 1911 by j priestman & co, sunderland. owned at time of loss by j westoll. three boilers, triple expansion engine of 325nhp, single shaft. machinery by the ne marine engineering co, sunderland. passage new york for london. cargo 6100 tons comprising oats and including 1413 tons of steel in billets, forgings and ingots for the ministry of munitions. stopped after an explosion beneath the vessel to establish the damage but was found to be sinking. crew recovered. UNABLE TO IDENTIFY WK DUE TO ABSENCE OF SUPERSTRUCTURE AND GENERAL DECAYED STATE. IT LIES ON STBD SIDE WITH PORT SIDE LARGELY INTACT. STBD SIDE COMPLETELY DESTROYED AFT OF FUNNEL. FOR'D HOLDS CONTAIN LARGE QUANTITY OF ORDNANCE SHELLS, POSSIBLY WITH EXPLOSIVE CONTENT. SMALL QUANTITY OF LIVE CARTRIDGE CASES FOUND IN AREA OF STERN - PROBABLY 'READY USE' AMMO. NO COAL CARGO FOUND. (HMS KIRKLISTON, SIG DTD 14.10.85). NCA. IDENTITY NOW UNCERTAIN. H2312/72 22.11.85 WK IS APPROX 100MTRS IN LENGTH AND HAS 3 BOILERS [HAZELWOOD HAD ONLY 2 BOILERS]. NO OTHER WK LOCATED WITHIN 1 MILE. RELATIVELY INTACT AND CORRECTLY ALIGNED ALTHOUGH THE SUPERSTRUCTURE IS MISSING. TWO LARGE MAIN BOILERS (HIGHEST PART), A DONKEY BOILER, DRIVE SHAFT WITH PROP ATTACHED, THE ENGINE BEING ON ITS SIDE. FWD HOLDS CONTAIN MANY 12 INCH SHELLS/BOMBS. (G LOCKETT). RETAIN WK 33MTRS IN REVISED POSN. BR STD. 23.10.12 EXAM'D 28.1.12 IN 5028.860N, 0151.489W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 34.56 IN GEN DEPTH 41MTRS. LEAST W/C DEPTH 34.18MTRS. SCOUR 1MTR DEEP EXTENDS 30MTRS TOWARDS WSW. LENGTH 110MTRS, WIDTH 30MTRS, HT 6MTRS. LIES 073/293 DEGS. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. IN TWO PARTS WITH LENGTHS 86MTRS & 15MTRS.
