Name: EMPIRE JAVELIN

Length 120.7 meter, width: 18.3 meter, draught: 10.7, tonnage 7177 ton
Load: ballast

Cause: vessel, built in 1944 by consolidated steel corp. and owned at the time of loss by ministry of war transport (blue star line), was torpedoed and sunk by german submarine u 772 while in convoy tbc1 on passage southampton to le havre. was carrying 1448 american servicemen. 8 lives lost. (ww2sl, ll ww2 & dods). 28.9.99 28.9.99 re-assessment of loss. vessel now thought to have hit a mine and then experienced an internal explosion. (naval historical branch).
