Cause: built in dublin by walpole and webb in 1866. 350 hp engines. owned by the united kingdom screw col co, managers r tedcastle, registered in dublin. the dolphin left the river mersey on friday 26 october, bound from garston for dublin with general cargo and passengers. in the early hours of the morning she was struck amidships by the paddle steamer 'longford' belonging to the city of dublin steam packet company. she sank almost immediately. the crew and passengers made their escape in the boats, which were then towed by the longford into the mersey.
