Cause: ex- german vessel, 'altona'. built in 1902 by flensburger schiffsh. ges. with triple expansion engines of 471nhp. owned at time of loss by the commonwealth of australia. torpedoed and sunk by german submarine u-96, 12m w by n calf of man. 9 of 10 crew lost. passage from liverpool. (dods & ww1 bms uboat sinkings). but was repd to have remained afloat and again torpedoed whilst under tow off holyhead.

WK HAS BROKEN INTO 3 LARGE SECTIONS. STERN SECTION HAS SINGLE DECK GUN FITTED OF 3 OR 4 INCH CALIBRE. EVIDENCE OF PREVIOUS SALVAGE OPS BUT MUCH NON-FERROUS DEBRIS LIES ON SEABED, APPARENTLY CARGO ITEMS. ONE TRAWL AND SOME NYLON FISHING LINES SNAGGED ON WRECKAGE. NO POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION MADE. (R S BUFTON, 21.8.89). NFA. HH100/351/04 18.4.91 LIES WITH LIST TO PORT. BOW V BROKEN IN 49MTRS AND STERN COMPLETE WITH LEAST DEPTH 31MTRS. 12 PDR GUN ON STERN WITH BARREL POINTING FOR'D. THIS WRECK HAS PROP DIAMETER OF 12FT 9IN (DIVER'S CLAIM), CONFIRMS EXISTENCE OF DECK-GUN. BELIEVED TO BE WESTPHALIA. (ISHERWOOD, TELECON 28.9.93). NCA. 27.2.95 CONFIRMED AS THE WRECK OF THE `CONARGO' AFTER ARTEFACTS FOUND. (S A RODGER 8.2.95). RSDRA2022000201003 12.10.2022 EXAM'D 25/3/2022; IN 5338.071N, 0449.444W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 32.7MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 45MTRS. LENGTH 116.45MTRS, WIDTH 30.92MTRS, HEIGHT 12.4MTRS, ORIENTATION 230/050 DEGS. CONARGO IS STILL UPRIGHT WITH THE SHOALEST POINT AT THE BOW OF THE SHIP, EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IS VISIBLE TO THE STARBOARD MIDSHIP AND AT THE STERN. (A-2-SEA SOLUTIONS LTD, HI 1708, H525-7372).
