Name: Cognac

Length 51.8 meter, width: 7.6 meter, draught: 4.9, tonnage 503 ton
Load: general and mixed goods,foodstuffs: liquid,natural fibres and materials in general: unprocessed and products

Cause: built of iron in 1860 by t vernon & sons. liverpool. owned at time of loss by charente ss co ltd. one boiler, compound expansion engine of 50 nhp, single shaft. machinery by lees, anderson & co, glasgow. passage charente for liverpool. sank follwing collision with ss voltaic. (ll & sibi).positional analysis: this wreck lies at a position 7nm east of the collision point given in shipping casualties (1898-99, p154).dimensional analysis: cognac was 51.81 m x 7.64m (lloyd's register 1889-90). this is consistent with the dimensions of the wreck.archival analysis: the wreck shows machinery just aft of midships. this is not inconsistent with lloyd’s register, which also described the vessel as having three holds, consistent with the wreck.

H4827/75 24.1.77 WK LOCATED 2.11.76 IN 533114N, 0043215W [OGB] USING HIFIX/6 [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 49.5 IN GEN DEPTH 45-57MTRS. DCS3 HT 6.2MTRS. LENGTH 45MTRS; LYING NNE/SSW. A SMALL WRECK LOCATED ON THE SIDE OF A SHOALER BANK. (HMS FOX. HI 54/76). BR STD. H4472/81 8.3.83 EXISTENCE AND POSN CONFIRMED. NO FURTHER EXAMINATION CARRIED OUT. (HMS FOX, HI 3A). 21.10.96 REPD TO BE THE WRECKAGE OF A SMALL COASTER. THE HULL IS UPRIGHT AND INTACT, THE SUPERSTRUCTURE AND BRIDGE HAVE COLLAPSED EXPOSING THE ENGINE. THOUGHT TO BE A WW2 CASUALTY. (J SHAW, 10.10.96). NCA. 11.3.14 EXAM'D 6.11.13 IN 5331.245N, 0432.279W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 49.82 IN GEN DEPTH 54MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH 66.6MTRS, WIDTH 19.6MTRS, HT 4.18MTRS. LIES 030/210 DEGS. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. INTACT, UPRIGHT. (NETSURVEY, HI 1420). BOWS NE. FWD HOLDS COLLAPSED. RETAIN WK 49MTRS IN REVISED POSN. 1.2.23 WRECK SURVEYED 13/8/2020: MBES DATA SHOWS WRECK OF A COASTER LENGTH 53MTRS, WIDTH 7.8MTRS BOW NE. TWO HOLDS FWD, ONE AFT, CENTRAL ENGINE ROOM. THIS WRECK IS POSITIONALLY, ARCHIVALLY AND DIMENSIONALLY CONSISTENT WITH VESSEL "COGNAC". (INNES MCCARTNEY BOOK "ECHOES FROM THE DEEP"). UPDATE "COGNAC" AND ATTRIBUTES.
