Cause: built of iron in 1860 by t vernon & sons. liverpool. owned at time of loss by charente ss co ltd. one boiler, compound expansion engine of 50 nhp, single shaft. machinery by lees, anderson & co, glasgow. passage charente for liverpool. sank follwing collision with ss voltaic. (ll & sibi).positional analysis: this wreck lies at a position 7nm east of the collision point given in shipping casualties (1898-99, p154).dimensional analysis: cognac was 51.81 m x 7.64m (lloyd's register 1889-90). this is consistent with the dimensions of the wreck.archival analysis: the wreck shows machinery just aft of midships. this is not inconsistent with lloyd’s register, which also described the vessel as having three holds, consistent with the wreck.
