Cause: built in 1883 by m pearse & co, stockton-on-tees. owned at time of loss by g w ward, newcastle-upon-tyne. compound inverted engine, single shaft. machinery by blair & co, newcastle-upon-tyne. passage new york for london. sank following a collision with ss bellcairn. (sibi).

LYING UPRIGHT AND WELL BROKEN UP WITH DECKS HAVING COLLAPSED TO WITHIN A METRE OF THE SEABED. THERE IS A LARGE FISHING NET SNAGGED AND FLOATING ABOUT 20FT ABOVE THE WRECK DUE TO FLOATS STUCK INSIDE. (J WELCH). CHART AS WK 49MTRS. BR STD. HH090/961/01 8.12.03 HH090/961/01 8.12.03 EXAM'D 23.7.03 IN 5020.278N, 0226.678W [WGD] USING DGPS. LEAST E/S DEPTH 48.8 IN GEN DEPTH 54MTRS. NO SCOUR. LENGTH 104MTRS, WIDTH 27MTRS. DCS3 HT 5.6MTRS. LIES 117/297 DEGS. STRONG MAGNETIC ANOMALY. WELL BROKEN, APPEARS AS AN AREA OF WRECKAGE. (GARDLINE, HI 961). AMEND WK 48MTRS. BR STD. 5.9.08 5.9.08 WK IS UPRIGHT BUT WELL BROKEN. THE COMPOUND ENGINE LIES ON ITS STBD SIDE. POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION AS BRITANNIA BY POTTERY (BLUE PRINT 'BRITANNIA' IN BELT DESIGN).
