Shipwreck details

Name: BREDA

Length 122.8 meter, width: 17.7 meter, draught: 10.7, tonnage 6941 ton
Load: aircraft,general and mixed goods,animals (land & sea) and birds

Cause: built in 1921 by new waterway shipbuilding co, schiedam. owned at time of loss by koninkl. nederl. stoomb., maats. four boilers, two turbines, single shaft. machinery by met-vickers elect co ltd, manchester. passage london for bombay. cargo stated to be: 3000tons cement in hold 5; 175tons tobacco and cigarettes in hold 4; 3 hawker biplanes, 30 de havilland tiger moths in hold 1; engines and aircraft spare parts in hold 3; rubber soled sandals in hold 2 and also naafi crockery; copper ingots; 10 horses and 9 dogs. near misses by bombs from german aircraft broke engine room piping and ship flooded while at anchor waiting convoy. vessel was taken in tow and beached in ardmucknish bay. some salvage was done before vessel slipped into deeper water. (diver magazine jan 2000 & sibi).

WK WAS TWICE CLEARED AT 27FT, AND THREE FIRM FOULS OBTAINED AT 28FT. EXAMINED BY DIVERS. HIGHEST POINT APPEARS TO BE REMAINS OF AFTER SUPERSTRUCTURE. A MAST SIGHTED LYING ATHWARTSHIPS ON WELL DECK. RODGERS STATED THAT THE WK WAS VISITED BY MEMBERS OF THE EDINBURGH BRANCH OF BSAC IN JUL'66 AND AGAIN BY PERTH BRANCH OF BSAC IN 1967 WHO FOUND WK TO BE LYING STERN IN 100FT OF WATER, BOWS IN 80FT OF WATER. CARGO AT TIME OF LOSS WAS GENERAL, TOBACCO, AEROPLANES, 3 BIPLANES & 33 D.H. MOTHS, NAAFI GOODS ETC. (UNDERWATER MAGAZINE JUN'67) 16.10.67 HOLDS SILTED UP & FULL OF HARD CEMENT. CARGO SPREAD ABOUT. (R LARN, UNDERWATER MAGAZINE AUG/SEP'67). 2.12.68 WAR RISK INSURANCE: VESSEL, THE HULL, HAS BEEN SOLD MANY YEARS BACK ALSO SALVAGE HAS TAKEN PLACE ON THE CARGO. 21.7.70 PROPELLOR MISSING.
