Cause: built in 1912 by atel & ch de france, dunkirk. two boilers, triple expansion engine of 279nhp, single shaft. passage cardiff for le havre. stopped by u-29 and crew forced to abandon. was sunk by explosive scuttling charges placed below decks. (sibi).

H05027/45 4.4.60 POSN 500530N, 040612W CONFIRMED BY HMS HEDINGHAM CASTLE IN AUG 1945 IN COURSE OF TRIALS OF EXPERIMENTAL GEAR. THREE ISLAND SHIP ON EVEN KEEL, LENGTH 300FT, HT 30FT. DIRECTION 190/330DEG. (CAPT A/S E ESTAB FAIRLIE, 22.9.45). H3950/70 23.9.70 NOW CHARTED AS WK 59MTRS IN 500530N, 040612W. (HMS HEDINGHAM CASTLE, AUG 1945). NC 1613. H3110/72 4.1.73 WK IN 500532.4N, 040603.5W [OGB] USING HIFIX [2 LOP]. GOOD ALL ROUND SONAR CONTACT. FLAT BOTTOM AREA. GOOD E/S TRACE 56.0MTRS IN 68.0MTRS, SEABED OF FINE SAND & BROKEN SHELL. LIES 006/186 DEGS WITH BOWS TOWARDS 006 DEGS. INTACT AND UPRIGHT. (GARDLINE, HI 1059). AMEND WK 60MTRS. BR STD. 12.7.06 DIVED IN LISTED POSN. THIS IS THE WK OF A LARGE CARGO VESSEL. BOTH THE FWD AND AFT AREAS ARE A JUMBLE OF TWISTED FRAMES AND PLATES. MIDSHIPS IS MORE INTACT WITH FRAMES IN SITU MAKING A BEAM MEASUREMENT POSSIBLE. ONE BOILER HAS TIPPED UP AT THE SIDE OF THE WK WHILST ANOTHER IS COVERED OVER. A FRENCH MANUFACTURED SOUNDING MACHINE HAS BEEN RECOVERED, MADE BY HENRY LAPOUTE - PARIS, SUGGESTING THAT THIS IS A FRENCH VESSEL. 'AUGUST CONSEIL' WAS LOST VERY CLOSE TO THIS POSITION.
