Cause: built in 1904 by vickers, sons & maxim ltd, barrow in furness. owned at time of loss by donaldson bros ltd (anchor line). six boilers, two triple expansion engines of 855ihp, twin shaft. passage montreal for glasgow. torpedoed some 20ft from the stern while steaming at 20 knots by u-53. was abandoned and sank. cargo 7000 tons general, 440 horses, 109 distressed british seamen (dms) and 44 military personnel. 15 crew lost.
