Cause: 14.5.31 built by scheepbouwwerf 'de merwede', v/h van vliet & co, hardinxveld, holland. yard number 215. launched 14.5.31. owned at time of loss by richar hughes & co, (liverpool), thomas j tierney, manager. departed from partington, near manchester, via the manchester ship canal on 5.12.1940. bound for dublin, cargo coal. disappeared en route. bodies of the crew washed ashore at prestatyn and rhyl. posted missing 8.1.1941. probably sunk by mine.

VERT HT 7.3MTRS, SHADOW HT 7.2MTRS. LENGTH 52.3MTRS, BEAM 11.6MTRS. LARGE WK, LYING 318,138 DEG, LISTING TO THE SW. SUPERSTRUCTURE APPEARS TO HAVE COLLAPSED. CHART AS WK 34MTRS. (HMS HECATE, HI 357). AMEND TO WK 34MTRS. BR STD. HH100/351/06 24.8.92 DIVED ON IN CHARTED POSN. WK OF LARGE SS LYING ON ITS PORT SIDE WITH BOW SE. HAS 4 HOLDS WITH MIDSHIPS BRIDGE STRUCTURE WHICH HAS PARTIALLY COLLAPSED. COAL CARGO HAS SPREAD OVER A LARGE AREA. STEM APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN BLOWN UP AND RUDDER AND STBD PROPELLER BLADES ARE MISSING. A LARGE TRAWL NET IS ATTACHED TO STERN AND IS TIGHTLY SPIRALLED GIVING A FALSE IMPRESSION OF BEING A MAST. THIS RISES SOME 7MTRS ABOVE STBD SIDE. NOT POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED BUT THOUGHT POSSIBLY TO BE WK OF SS KILCOAN - DIMENSIONS ARE SIMILAR. (K HURLEY, 9.8.92). HH100/351/06 22.3.93 NOW THOUGHT POSSIBLY TO BE WK OF LINDA BLANCHE. (K HURLEY, 9.3.93). HH100/351/13 30.1.98 AM CERTAIN THAT THIS IS THE 'ALMWCH ROSE'. CONFIRMED WITH PHOTOGRAPH AND SURVEY AND HISTORIC DETAILS MATCH NICELY. (K HURLEY). SEP2022/000028019 12.04.22 EXAM'D 14.08.2021; IN 5331.526N, 0349.533W [WGD]. LEAST M/B DEPTH 35.14MTRS IN GEN DEPTH 42MTRS. LENGTH 52.7MTRS, WIDTH 9.5MTRS, HEIGHT 7.9MTRS, ORIENTATION 134/314 DEGS. WRECK LAYING ON ITS PORT SIDE. (CLINTON MARINE SURVEY AB, HI1507 - H525-8204). AMEND NDW 35MTRS IN REVISED POSN.
